I believe by that graph, the further you are to the right, the more economically free you are. Where the further you are to the bottom, the more socially free you are.
Seeing as Hitler and Stalin were extremely restrictive in both economics and personal lives, shouldn't they both still be right next to each other in the authoritarian left?

Fascism still had private enterprise/possessions in one way or another. Communism had none of that. So they differ via economics by like, .06568 degrees.

Yes, which is why they should be nextdoor neighbors on any political spectrum.

Two houses down, but neighbors none-the-less.

one had class antagonism as a policy, one had class collaboration as a policy. national syndalicasm and leftist-syndicalism were very different in structure and goals. the fascists wanted to unite all classes, and stamp out the working class movements. leftists were working class and wanted to wage a class war against the other classes.

they are very very different in structure, class support, ideology, tactics, demographics, and worldview.

Great discussion!
Thanks for putting up the graphic of the political spectrum, Ick.

Glenn Beck has been harping on this very point for a while now on his program. Republicans and Democrats are like the difference between Stalin and Hitler - 2 houses down from one another but neighbors nonetheless. (I'm not talking about the genocidal baggage here.)

So, both parties are just taking us in the same totalitarian direction, one just wants to do it on an accelerated program with the collective good at its core. The other has the corporate good at its core. In between are the people who just want to hold on to whatever shreds of liberty are left of the Republic our founders passed on to us.

The party system is nothing more than a distraction for the masses to attack each other instead of the government bureaucracy that keeps growing and taking more and more power from individuals for itself.

Some days I just wanna grab my guns and head for the mountains.

im currently re-reading (for the ninth time or so) the rise and fall of the third reich, as well as this sociological examination of every fascist movement on earth, including demographics and such.

i can start parroting statistics when i get back home and get my hands on my little red book of fascism stats.

Apparently, we might be better off if you did.
